November 10th marked a momentous occasion at Abbey Grange as the school had the honour of hosting Rachel Reeves, the local Member of Parliament and Labour Shadow Chancellor. The visit provided an invaluable opportunity for students to engage with a prominent figure in British politics and gain insights into her experiences and role in the political arena.
During the interactive session, Ms. Reeves shared her journey in politics and addressed thought-provoking questions posed by students. Attendees demonstrated a keen interest in the political landscape and potential aspirations for a career in the field, as well as showing an inquisitive interest in real-time topics affecting UK society as a whole.
Our students showed great curiosity into Ms. Reeves' pivotal role in the Labour party, discussing her experiences as a woman in a profession historically dominated by men, and explored the profound influence of social media on contemporary politics. The dialogue extended to the Labour party's plans on environmental issues, shedding light on the potential changes that could be implemented should they come into power.
Questions from our students touched on a wide variety of issues, such as plans to improve public transport in the north of England, the recent introduction of ULEZ in London, the cost of living crisis, wider global conflicts, and even potential opportunities for work experience within her team.
The engaging conversation provided a unique opportunity for our students to gain first hand insights into the workings of British politics and the challenges and opportunities it presents.
Abbey GrangeAcademy extends its sincere gratitude to Rachel Reeves for taking the time to inspire and impart knowledge to the aspiring young minds within our school community. We look forward to hosting more enlightening sessions in the future, to broaden the horizons of our students, and encourage them to consider the impact they could make in politics and beyond.
