A-level Chemistry attempts to answer the big question ‘what is the world made of’ and it’s the search for this answer that makes this subject so fascinating. From investigating how one substance can be changed drastically into another, to researching a new wonder drug to save millions of lives, the opportunities that chemistry provides are endless. These are just some of the contexts you will study through both practical tasks and theory, as well as developing many essential skills such as peer review evaluating, problem solving and critical thinking.

Chemistry at A Level is a rich, interactive course that helps students develop theoretical and practical skills designed to provide a solid grounding for studying Chemistry or subjects requiring Chemistry including Medicine at university.
Students will be challenged to gain technical skills that help them to analyse experimental data and explore both traditional and modern theoretical concepts.
The two-year course is comprised around three themes, physical, organic and inorganic chemistry. You will study wide ranging ideas including Periodicity through to the analysis of organic molecules, with context lead real world applications being explored.
The two-year course is comprised of 6 topics. The topics are:
The A Level qualification consists of three written exams.
Paper 1 35% written exam (2 Hours) short and long answer questions
Paper 2 35% written exam (2 Hours) short and long answer questions
Paper 3 30% written exam (2 Hours) multiple choice, Practical and data skill questions, short questions
Subject to successful completion of a series of chemistry experiments, students will also be awarded a practical endorsement certificate in Chemistry. This will demonstrate their achievement in a wide range of chemical experimental techniques.
Academy Entry Requirements for A Level pathway
Grade 6 or above in the separate Science GCSE or grade 66 in Combined Science
Students must also attain a grade 5 in Maths GCSE
Chemistry is a challenging yet fulfilling subject that offers great support. It is interesting with fun practicals that leave you thinking and asking questions. The answers to those questions are incredibly intriguing. Despite its toughness, chemistry provides valuable insights into the world of science, and teachers and fellow students are always there to lend a helping hand.
