Physics

A level physics is the study of how the universe works. In the course, students will develop skills and knowledge from GCSE such as mechanics, circuits and waves. They will also meet new branches of physics such as particle physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics. The course will build maths skills, the ability to problem solve and also provide a new way of viewing the world.

Subject Lead: Mr A Fisher

Physics is not just a collection of concepts and theories but rather a different way of challenging our imagination. With concepts ranging from the smallest subatomic particles to the whole Universe, this course will allow you to learn new ways of thinking on a journey to start to search for and explain the fundamental answers of the Universe.

Physics is a practical subject and throughout the course, students will carry out a wide range of practical activities to develop their skills and understanding, and to prepare them to study a physics-based subject at university.

The A Level course lasts two years with three examinations at the end of the second year. Although there is no coursework, students’ performance during practical lessons will be assessed throughout the course.

Paper 1

2 hour written examination largely on Year 12 work.

Paper 2

2 hour written examination largely on Year 13 work.

Paper 3

2 hour written examination on practical experiments and skills, data analysis and astrophysics.

Academy Entry Requirements

Grade 6 or above in the separate Science GCSE or grade 66 in Combined Science

Students must also attain a grade 6 in Maths GCSE

Physics isn't just a subject; it's the study of change itself. It unlocks endless opportunities for the future. It complements math A-level perfectly, with fascinating particles and supportive teachers. Mechanics and projectile motion feel like superpowers, and brace yourself for the mind-blowing marvels of quantum physics. It's a wondrous journey of curiosity and adventure that deepens our understanding of the universe and real-life applications of maths. Positive, down-to-earth teachers make complex concepts clear. A-level physics is a fun and challenging way to explore our world.
